Rainbow-coloured landmarks across Australia are lighting up for LGBTIQ+ Domestic Violence Awareness Day to highlight the often invisible issue of domestic and family violence within LGBTQ+ communities.
LGBTIQ+ Health Australia director Kai Noonan said days like this create important opportunities for conversations with LGBTQ+ people in our lives:
“Where we see powerful change is when people in their lives ask them if everything is okay, and days like this are a reminder to check in with those loved ones.”
Many survivors in these communities face unique challenges — including discrimination, a lack of inclusive services, and isolation.
Organisers hope the rainbow-lit buildings will not only show solidarity, but also encourage more people to seek help and remind everyone that support is available.
Support services:
1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732)
Lifeline (13 11 14)
Men’s Referral Service (1300 766 491)
Fullstop Australia (1800 385 578)
